Benazir's Assasination
Washington, D.C - Dec 27, 2007 -

The Association of Pakistani Professionals (AOPP) is deeply saddened and shocked by the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, leader of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP). Ms. Bhutto was an icon in Pakistani politics, and had risen to lead the PPP after her father, former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was given the death sentence almost 20 years ago, in 1979. On behalf of all of our members, we extend the deepest condolences to the families of Ms. Bhutto, and the families of her supporters whom were killed with her.

Ms. Bhutto will always be remembered as the first female national leader of Pakistan. She is the last of the Bhutto political dynasty, having entered politics upon the completion of her studies at Harvard and Oxford, and certainly joined the ranks of one of the highest profile women leaders of the world. She had exhibited great courage in galvanizing her party in the recent months since her return to Pakistan. The shock upon hearing the violent manner of her death will now be embedded in the nation's psyche, and has brought the entire country to a standstill.

The AOPP unequivocally condemns the attack of Ms. Bhutto and her supporters. AOPP also urges its fellow Pakistanis to show restraint at this difficult time, and to mourn the loss of Ms. Bhutto with customs appropriate to Islamic rituals and practices. More violence is not the answer; it is time now to show courageous restraint.

The AOPP is a non-political, nonprofit organization organized under the laws of the United States.
