ISF Nominated for UN Award Maha Akeel, Arab News |
JEDDAH, 12 December 2007 — The Islamic Solidarity Fund (ISF), a subsidiary of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), has been nominated for the 2007 UN Special Unit for South-South Cooperation award. The awards ceremony will take place in New York on Dec. 19 marking the 4th UN Day for South-South Cooperation. OIC Secretary-General Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu will be guest speaker at the event. It will be presided by Qatar, the current president of the high-level committee for south-south cooperation. The ISF will be one of the panelists at a discussion on “Innovative Financing for South-South Development Cooperation.” The ISF was established in 1974 to serve Muslims worldwide. Among its objectives is to promote scientific and technical research; set up and finance Islamic universities; provide relief and assistance to areas afflicted by crises and natural disasters; support Islamic centers and organize workshops in various fields. The fund has been successful in supporting the Palestinian people and extending relief to countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Sierra Leone. It has also set up various academic institutions including the Islamic University in Niger, the Islamic University in Uganda, the Islamic American College in Chicago, the Islamic Center in Guinea Bissau, and the Timbuktu Research Institute in Mali. The ISF has also assisted mosques, schools and hospitals around the world, and financed seminars on civilization dialogue in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Russia.(quote ends) |
