yoga asamprajnata (16)

free mind

By Kulamarva Balakrishna

Vienna,Friday,February 1,2008: Samprajnata
samadhi is achieved as reason leads to
analysis followed by happiness and self
consciousness. It is like advance elements of
the attacking forces exploring the defined
territory to spread out and occupy.Having
occupied the territory then there is a consolidating
phase that is familiarization.Harmonizing with
the environment. Then the system works making
the boss to be free untainted with routine, making
the table free. This status is called =asamprajnata
samadhi=. It means the =drasthu= is aware but
he makes his presence not obtrusive.

Some may confuse the words that at this stage
mind loses control becoming void of the territory,
which was defined before in the dharana phase,
then penetrated the whole territory in the immediate
dhyana moments followed by the digesteive and
absorbive samadhi. In this state =drashtu= is no
more occupier, because he has become one with
the =pratyaya=object but does not show off.

Here I like to narrate an episode mentioned by the
greatest poet of all time, Kalidasa. His master piece
Raghuvamsha covers Ramayana in short. Rama´s
great grand father Dileepa had no children. He was
concerned about the future of his kingdom. So he
drives to his guru Vasishta for seeking rememdy.
On arrival at guru Vasishta´s hermitage he explains
to the guru how he wishes to give up kingdom in
the younger hands so that he can in old age retire
into seclusion before giving up the body by yoga.
Guru Vasishta did not take it long. He remained
a moment as if a fish sleeping in a whirl pool.
=kshanamatram rishih tasthe supta meena iva
hradah=.

That is he was already in asamprajnata samadhi
Now he knew what was wrong, why Dileepa had no
kids.He explained some time ago,the king was
summoned by Indra, the king of gods for help.He
had rushed there in chariot. On way back he
remembered his duty to his queen, who was awaiting
the king return fresh after her menses. In his occupied
mind with the queen he could not notice on way the
grazing sacred cow =Kamadhenu=.It is normal for
the king to stop his chariot, touch and show affection
to the holy cow. But the sensitive cow had taken it to
her heart, thus preventing the queen becoming pregnant.
He at once told King Dileepa to attend the cow´s
grown up daughter cow =Nandini=.So the story
goes. The message here is guru Vasishta is
always under samadhi leaving his mind in rest.
That enabled him get into the heart of the problem
at once. This in fact is the apt description of
=asamprajnata samadhi=.

A restful mind, fresh, tuned to the environment.
In this condition of near voidness of the mind
illumination and focussing are instant. Then all
questions are answered as if by a super computer.
Patanjala sutra 18th in Samadhipada explains
this in these words =virama pratyaya abhyasa
purvah samskara vishesho anyah= under practice,
experience mind´s table is free,a clean slate
table. There remains only some trace filed in
the corner of mind safely.(end)
